What is Panchang?

Panchang, meaning 'five limbs,' is the Hindu calendar providing astronomical and astrological information for determining auspicious timings (muhurat) for religious ceremonies and important activities.

The Five Elements

1. Tithi - Lunar Day
30 lunar days in a month divided into Shukla Paksha (waxing) and Krishna Paksha (waning) based on moon's position.
2. Vara - Weekday
Seven days ruled by celestial bodies: Sunday (Sun), Monday (Moon), Tuesday (Mars), Wednesday (Mercury), Thursday (Jupiter), Friday (Venus), Saturday (Saturn).
3. Nakshatra - Lunar Constellation
27 lunar mansions through which the moon passes, each with specific influences and qualities.
4. Yoga - Auspicious Period
27 yogas calculated from combined sun and moon motion, each having significance for activities.
5. Karana - Half Tithi
Each tithi divided into two karanas. 11 karanas repeat in specific pattern throughout the month.

Hindu Months

Chaitra (Mar-Apr), Vaishakha (Apr-May), Jyeshtha (May-Jun), Ashadha (Jun-Jul), Shravana (Jul-Aug), Bhadrapada (Aug-Sep), Ashwin (Sep-Oct), Kartik (Oct-Nov), Margashirsha (Nov-Dec), Pausha (Dec-Jan), Magha (Jan-Feb), Phalguna (Feb-Mar)
